san antonio

this weekend, tye and i celebrated our belated 3-year by taking a weekend getaway to san antonio. because our sleeping patterns are both jacked up (we woke up at 5am), we were on our way by 10am. we stopped by san marcos for a snack* and some light shopping, then continued on our way to san antonio's botanical gardens. those that are familiar with my extreme hatred of sweating can probably sympathize with me when i say... walking around outside during the hottest time of day DURING THE SUMMER can seriously put a damper on any appreciation for tropical flora and their accompanying simulated ecosystems.

after the gardens, we checked in at the historical st. anthony hotel on the riverwalk. then it was back out into the sun to explore a neighborhood arts festival. all this time, i was sweating profusely and no doubt acting like a spoiled child who grew up in an igloo. tye, who was probably fed up with my bitching by this point, suggested we go swimming. well, that was all fine and dandy, except that neither of us had brought our swimsuits. soo, we were off to the riverwalk mall to rectify this problem. well, that solution didn't quite pan out, so we gave up on the swimming idea and decided to head to dinner. on our way (we walked EVERYWHERE during our excursion in s. a.), we saw a bunch of dogs and their owners walking outside the convention center. lo and behold, a dog show was in progress! since i tend to miss my cordmonster terribly during my trips to austin, we decided to check it out to see if we could spot any maltese. holy cow, there were a ZILLION dogs and cages inside, and though we did not find any maltese, we did see the terrier group being shown. there were lots of booths with vendors selling doggy products and a myriad of breeds being groomed by their handlers. that was my first experience at a dog show. i can definitely see how attending them can become addicting; if not for the love of dogs, then for the love of dog products. corduroy is definitely a very spoiled pooch.

afterwards, we walked to the tower of the americas and waited in line for an hour and a half to dine at the top. we killed time by checking out the 4-D ride, which was basically a 12-minute movie with spurts of water, mist, rocking seat motions, and a bull's horn poking you in the back. i'd say it was worth the $6. the view at the restaurant was breathtaking! dinner was ok, albeit expensive. for those that have never been, the tower of the americas has a rotating restaurant at the top, so tye and i were able to enjoy a 360 degree view of san antonio while eating. we were lucky and were facing west when the sun set, and thus experienced a nice "romantic" moment.

tired, full, and sticky with dried sweat (yes, i just had to reiterate HOW MUCH i dislike the heat), we walked back to the hotel and had a couple of drinks at the bar. the next day, we stopped at cracker barrel in san marcos for lunch and then chilled at borders for a couple of hours while waiting to watch pirates 2 (the theater for pirates was PACKED. i see why it's been the #1 movie for how many weeks in a row?). and now i'm back at tye's apartment, relishing the fact that i can sit on the futon with the a/c at 60 something degrees and not worry about my butt sticking to the seat. all in all, it was a fun weekend, and i'm glad we got to take a mini vacation in different surroundings.

the end.

*by snack, i mean a chili cheese hot dog, hamburger, and peanut butter chocolate shake. we like to gorge ourselves.
